Privacy Policy

My Reason Why (“we”, “us”) is a family-operated sole proprietorship that runs myreasonwhybook.com. This page explains what personal information we collect when you visit the site or buy from us, how we use and share it, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

  • Order information. Your name, email address, shipping and billing address, phone number if you give one, the items you ordered, and the order total, shipping and any tax. Our store runs on WordPress and WooCommerce, which keep your order records on our website.
  • Payment information. You enter your payment details on the checkout page, and Stripe processes the payment. We do not store your full card number. We may receive limited payment details from Stripe, such as the card brand, the last four digits, and whether the payment succeeded.
  • Messages you send us. If you email support@myreasonwhybook.com, we keep your message and our reply.
  • Email marketing information. If you choose to receive marketing email from us, we keep your email address, your name if you give it, and a record of when and how you signed up. Our email marketing service is Klaviyo (see below). Klaviyo also receives your order details so we can manage our email list.
  • Site activity. Klaviyo’s tool on our website loads on our pages and sets a cookie and browser storage entries when you visit, whether or not you have subscribed. When Klaviyo can tell who you are, it can record which pages and products you view, items you add to your cart, and when you start checkout. Klaviyo can tell who you are if you are logged in to our website (for example, a site administrator) or if you type your email address at checkout. We have tested only some situations, and we do not promise that no activity from an unidentified visitor is ever recorded. How Klaviyo handles activity from a browser before and after it is identified also depends on Klaviyo’s own settings and on your browser.
  • Technical data. Information your browser sends when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, which our hosting provider (Hostinger) records in server logs.
  • No customer accounts. Customer account registration on our store is turned off. You check out as a guest, and we do not ask you to create a password. Administrator accounts used by us to run the website do exist, and they are not available to customers.

Cookies and similar technology

  • Store cookies that are necessary. Our store uses cookies that keep your cart, session and checkout working: a cookie that remembers the contents of your cart, a cookie that helps update the cart, and a session cookie.
  • Order source tracking (WooCommerce). WooCommerce’s order attribution feature sets cookies whose names begin with sbjs_ when you load a page. They record how you arrived at our store, such as the referring site or link, so that an order can show its source. WooCommerce describes these cookies as lasting for your browsing session.
  • Klaviyo: script loaded. A script from Klaviyo loads on our pages. It does not load on the checkout page itself, which uses a separate Klaviyo connection.
  • Klaviyo: cookie and storage created. On your first page load, Klaviyo sets a cookie named __kla_id that lets Klaviyo recognize your browser, and our site stores Klaviyo entries in your browser’s local storage (such as __kl_key, klaviyoOnsite, kl-post-identification-sync and, on product, cart and checkout pages, __kla_viewed, a list of products viewed) and session storage (klaviyoPagesVisitCountV2). Klaviyo says the __kla_id cookie can last up to 2 years once a visitor is identified, depending on the browser. In our testing in a Chrome-based browser it was set for about 400 days.
  • Klaviyo: events sent and received. In our brief test of a visit by someone not identified, only Klaviyo’s script files were downloaded and Klaviyo received no activity. We did not test longer visits, clicking or scrolling, other browsers, or an email typed at checkout, so we cannot say that activity from an unidentified visitor is never sent. For someone Klaviyo has identified, Klaviyo receives and records events such as Active on Site, Viewed Product, Added to Cart and Started Checkout, and it receives your order details after you buy.
  • Stripe. On our product, cart and checkout pages, Stripe’s code can set cookies (such as __stripe_mid and __stripe_sid) and collect device and activity information, such as how you move through the page, to process payments and prevent fraud. Stripe says it uses this information for fraud detection and security and not for advertising. Stripe’s cookie policy explains more.
  • Not used. We do not use advertising pixels or analytics tools from Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok or Google.

Your browser lets you block cookies and clear local storage, but the cart and checkout will not work without the necessary ones. We do not currently show a cookie banner or ask for your choice before these cookies are set.

How we use your information

To take, process and ship your order; send order confirmations and shipping updates; answer your questions; prevent fraud and keep the site secure; keep business, tax and accounting records; and, only if you have chosen to receive them, send you marketing email. We also use site activity to understand how people use our store and to decide what to send to people who have subscribed.

My Reason Why is family-operated. The members of our family who pack and ship orders see your name, shipping address and the items you ordered, and they use that information only to fulfill your order.

Order emails and marketing emails are different

  • Order and shipping emails tell you about an order you placed, such as the confirmation and tracking details. We send them whether or not you subscribe to marketing. They are delivered through our email delivery service, Brevo, which handles your email address and the content of those emails.
  • Marketing email (newsletters and promotions) is sent only to people who chose to receive it. At checkout there is an optional box to subscribe, and it is unchecked unless you check it. If you check it, we add you to our email list. Buying from us does not subscribe you, and checking the box is never required to buy.
  • Unsubscribing. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and we stop sending promotional email as soon as you use it. We can also unsubscribe you if you email support@myreasonwhybook.com. Unsubscribing only stops marketing email. It does not erase your customer profile, your order history or the records we must keep for legal reasons, and it does not stop order and shipping emails about an order you have placed. After you unsubscribe, we keep your email address and the fact that you unsubscribed so we can honor your choice. If you want your information deleted, you must ask us to delete it (see “Your choices and privacy rights”).
  • Email tracking. Our marketing emails can record whether an email was delivered and opened and which links were clicked.
  • Text messages. We do not send text messages (SMS), and we have no marketing text program. If we ever do, we will ask for your separate, express agreement first, texts will never be a condition of buying, and we will update this page before sending any.

Who we share it with

  • Stripe, to process your payment.
  • Klaviyo, our email marketing service, which receives your order details, site activity and marketing sign-up information.
  • Brevo, which delivers our order and shipping emails.
  • Hostinger, which hosts our website and stores our site data, logs and backups.
  • The carrier that delivers your package, which receives your name and address.
  • Authorities, when the law requires it, or to protect rights, safety or property.

We do not sell your personal information for money.

Advertising tools (not active)

We may in the future use advertising and measurement tools from Meta, TikTok or Google. None is turned on as of the date of this policy. Before we turn any on, we will update this page and provide the choices and consent tools the law requires.

Do Not Track and similar signals

Our site does not currently respond to browser “Do Not Track” or Global Privacy Control signals.

How long we keep information

  • Orders. We aim to keep completed WooCommerce order records for 7 years, subject to applicable law.
  • Support emails. We aim to keep general support inquiries for 2 years after we resolve them, and support emails about an order for 7 years when we need them as business records.
  • Email marketing profiles. We keep a subscriber’s profile in Klaviyo while they are subscribed. After someone unsubscribes, we keep only what we need to honor that choice, such as their email address and the fact that they unsubscribed, together with records we must keep for other legal reasons. Klaviyo does not publish a fixed retention period for active profiles.
  • Deleting on request. We delete personal information by hand when you ask (see “Your choices and privacy rights”). We do not have an automatic deletion process. If the law requires us to delete information sooner than the periods above, we delete it sooner. We keep what the law requires us to keep, such as order and tax records.
  • Backups. We keep backups of our website, which contain copies of site data, including order information. Our hosting provider makes automatic daily backups, and we also make manual backups ourselves. Backup copies are replaced or deleted over time, so information we have deleted from our live store can remain in a backup until that backup is replaced or deleted.

How we protect information

We use reasonable measures to protect information, including an encrypted (HTTPS) connection on our website, payment processing by Stripe, and limiting access to our website and records to those who need it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your choices and privacy rights

You can ask us to tell you what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, subject to records we must keep for legal and tax reasons. Email support@myreasonwhybook.com with the subject “Privacy request”. The owner handles privacy requests personally. We may need to verify your identity before we act on a request, and we will not treat you differently for making one.

When we delete your information on request, we do it by hand: we remove or anonymize what we can in our store, delete your profile in Klaviyo (Klaviyo then permanently removes the profile and redacts the personal details in its event history, and keeps only a record of contact information to show that a deletion occurred), and delete or anonymize copies in our other service providers where we can. Some records we must keep, such as order and tax records, and Stripe keeps its own records of payments as the law requires. If you asked only to stop marketing email, we unsubscribe you instead of deleting your profile, so that we can remember your choice.

Depending on where you live, privacy laws may give you additional rights. If you are a California resident, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, sell or share; to correct or delete it; to opt out of the sale or sharing of your information; to limit the use of sensitive personal information; and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. In the last 12 months, the categories of personal information we collect from customers and visitors are: identifiers (name, email address, shipping and billing address, phone number if provided, IP address); commercial information (the items you order and your order history); internet activity (pages and products viewed, cart and checkout activity); and payment information, which Stripe handles. We use these as described above, and we do not sell them for money.

To stop marketing email, use the unsubscribe link in any marketing email or email us. If you tell us you do not want marketing messages, we will stop sending them to you.

Children

This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We will post any change on this page with a new date. If we add a marketing, advertising or analytics tool, or start sending text messages, we will update this page before it is turned on.
